Whitsundelica

With 'Screamadelica' taking up a lot of brainspace over the last few months, I thought it would be a good idea to try and make a 'Screamadelica' using other songs that sound like, or look like, or feel like, or are simply a similar length to, the songs on 'Screamadelica'. It turned out to be harder than I thought, and some of the tracks seem just plain impossible to replicate in any way. But here is my attempt, with the mp3s available to download from the link below...

01) BRAND NEW DAY - THE STAPLES SINGERS

The only track that actually sounds like the song it is substituting. This is a Staples Singers track used as the theme song for a film called 'The Landlord'. I got it from an album of gospel music put out by the Stax family of labels called 'The Gospel Truth'

02) LE ROI DES MOUCHES - JEAN-CLAUDE VANNIER

Playing the part of 'Slip Inside This House' is a track from the compilation album 'Prog Is Not A Four Letter Word'.

03) THE STORM (12”) - WORLD OF TWIST

Third best Madchester group? Second? The very best? Here occupying the 'Don't Fight It, Feel It' slot with an extended mix.

04) ERASER - RP BOO

Nothing at all like 'Higher Than The Sun' but I like it. From 'Bangs and Works Volume 1', this track is designed to facilitate a kind of dancing called footworks or footworking or juking, which I believe is popular among the young people in the city of Chicago.

05) WATER WORLD - SAM SPENCE

'Inner Space' is here represented by Sam Spence in a slightly more earthbound but equally alien environment, all conjured up through the magic of the analogue synthesizer. From the compilation album 'Cloud Cuckooland'.

06) DOWN IN THE GHETTO - S.O.U.L.

S.O.U.L. performing an unwitting variation on the 'Come Together' theme.

07) THE OUD & THE FUZZ - JOHN BERBERIAN & THE MIDDLE EASTERN ENSEMBLE

I couldn't find anything remotely like 'Loaded' but this elongated exploration of rock band and oud is a surefire hit with anyone who likes their workouts with a hint of exoticism.

08) FARTHER ALONG - MEREDITH SISCO

From the soundtrack to 'Winter's Bone' comes Meredith Sisco with a beautiful rendition of 'Farther Along', here filling the shoes of tender rock ballad 'Damaged'. I was going to put The Faces here, but I couldn't find the right record.

09) UNREQUITED LOVE - LYKKE LI

Jeans model Lykke Li in the 'I'm Comin' Down' role. A little bit doo-wop, a little bit Beach Boys, a little bit Spector. Highlight of the album 'Wounded Rhymes'.

10) SALSA SMURPH - SPECIAL REQUEST

Kraftwerk-inflected dub symphony on Tommy Boy Records.

11) GOD DOG - SHIRLEY & DOLLY COLLINS

A bit like 'Shine Like Stars' in that it has harmoniums or whatever they are, but the lyrical content is very different. This song is written by one of The Incredible String Band, and is on the album 'Anthems In Eden'.
